Подтема: What the future holds

Цель: развитие у учащихся языковой и речевой компетентности в процессе формирования навыков диалогической и монологической речи, аудирования; формирование коммуникативной компетенции учащихся при помощи информационно-коммуникационных технологий и интерактивных упражнений.

Задачи:

· Практические:

1) Активизирование в речи учащихся лексического материала по данной теме

2) Систематизирование знаний лексического и фактического материала по данной теме 3) Контроль знаний в форме игры по изученной ранее грамматической теме First Conditional

4) Закрепление полученных знаний по новой теме путем выполнения упражнений

5) Ознакомление с основными предсказаниями по поводу будущего современного человека

· Обучающие:

1) Обучение высказываться о будущем используя конструкции с глаголами will, may, might, could

2) Обучение применению новой грамматической темы на практике

3) Обучение новым лексическим единицам и употреблению их в речи

4) Обучение учащихся выражать и аргументировать свое отношение к проблеме

1) Развитие навыков диалогической и монологической речи

2) Развитие навыков аудирования, языкового предположения и реакции учащихся

Оборудование: доска, мел, учебник (SB, WB), аудио-проигрыватель, компьютер, проектор, интерактивная доска, раздаточный материал (упражнения)

I. Организационная часть

1) Приветствие

Today we are going to talk about the future. We'll learn how to speculate about the future and make predictions using such verbs as may, will, won't, could and might. You'll remind me what the 1st conditional is. And you'll consolidate your knowledge in practice. So we have a lot to do.

Let's start from the revision of new vocabulary that you had to translate and learn at home. But first of all we'll read them all together to be sure that you pronounce them right. So, repeat after me (WB p.115).

Now I'll tell you an English word and you'll translate it into Russian. Don't forget raise your hand before answering. So, let's start.

Today we are discussing future and predictions about the future.

We often make predictions with the first conditional. For example, If you buy a laptop, you'll be able to work anywhere. Remind me what conditional sentences are? What are their types?

Conditional Sentences are also known as Conditional Clauses or If Clauses. They are used to express that the action in the main clause (without if) can only take place if a certain condition (in the clause with if) is fulfilled. There are three types of Conditional Sentences, as you know. We'll think of the first conditional today. диалогический монологический лексический грамматический



First conditional

> It is possible and also very likely that the condition will be fulfilled.

Form: if + Present Simple, will* + base form of verb (=infinitive without TO)

*We can use may, might or could in the main clause.

Example: If I find her address, I'll send her an invitation.

For practicing your new vocabulary and this grammatical construction, we'll do the next task: I'll give you a word from your vocabulary and you are to make a sentence with it using the first conditional. The words are: to download, blog, flash drive, global warming, GM food, laptop, rainforest, to vote, website, webcam, to log onto, CD writer, and link.

Let's check. Read your sentence one by one. Julia, start, please.

4) Контроль грамматической темы First conditional

Let's find out who is the very best in knowledge of the first conditional. It will be a kind of competition. Let's make 4 groups. So, you have 4 tasks. For each right answer your group gets one point. The first group, which is ready to answer, gets one additional point.

It's game time!

The first task. You are to match the parts of the sentences - exercise 1 on the copies that you've got.

Who is ready? We have no time, so just say me number of sentence and letter. Group number__ answer the first, then by turns.

The second task. You are to complete the sentences by choosing the best alternative. But before it you must collate pictures and select variants of answers implicity, and after that choose the best alternative. Be attentive!

In the third task I'd like you to match the two halves of the sentences in exercise 2 on your copies. Let's get going.

4. If the students get good marks on the test, the teacher will be satisfied.

7. If we don't go out this evening, we will watch a film on TV.

8. If you eat too much chocolate cake, you won't feel very well.

9. If they don't hurry, they will miss the bus.

10. If she sees a snake, she will be afraid.

In few seconds the bell rings. So we'll continue after ten minutes break. Have a rest!

And the last task of our competition. There are pieces of the superstitions. You are to match them, the letters to numbers. Be attentive!

A-5 If you walk under ladder, you will have bad luck.

B-7 If you see a small spider, you will give money away.

C-1 If you scratch your left hand, you will get a lot of money.

D-6 If you talk of the Devil, he will appear.

E-2 If you touch wood, your good luck will continue.

F-8 If you break a mirror, you will have seven years' bad luck.

G-4 If a black cat crosses your path, you will have good luck

H-3 If a girl catches the bride's bouquet after a wedding, she will be the next to marry.

All right! The result of our competition is: the group number_ wins, so they are the very best in knowledge of the first conditional and get good marks today.

We continue our lesson and now let's pass to a new topic. I'd like you to imagine that the year is 2020. What developments do you expect to see in mobile phones and computers? (phones: without buttons, very thin, react to your words, video callings; computers: very lightweight, react to your words and touches, with 3D effect, without cables for charging)

Open your Student's books on page 45. And look at the photo of man. What do you think this man's job? What is he holding? (maybe he is manager of a big company or corporation, or manager of a mobile phone's shop, or just shop assistant)

So, let's read the text and find out: What is this man's job? Why is he good at it?

It is an exercise 1 on page 45 (SB).

Key: He is the president of Casio. He is good at his job because can tell which gadgets will sell well and which won't.

You can notice that Kazuo Kashio often uses such verbs as may, will, won't, could and might in his speech. Why does he use them? What is the purpose of it? Does he make predictions? What is prediction? (Prediction - imagining what the future will be like or what will happen in the future).

You are right! So this is our new grammatical theme today: using may, might, could, will, first conditional for speculating about the future and making predictions. Let's read out information in Learn box!

Is it clear? I think, you have faced with this information before. But anyway I want to check your understanding. So,

- Which words do we use to talk about possibility in the future? (may, might, could)

- Do they have exactly the same meaning? (No, might is less probable than may or could)

- How do we make a positive prediction? (with will)

- And a negative prediction? (with won't)

Let's practice. Open your WB on page 41, exercise 1. You are to complete predictions with will, won't, may, or might not and the verb in brackets. The first sentence is given as example. Let's start.

The next task is on the page 114 in your SB, exercise 1 (5.2). You should write sentences using will, may, might not, or won't and the prompts. Do it individually.

3) Развитие навыков аудирования

Now we'll watch a video “Did you know?” which includes facts and statistics focusing on the changing media landscape, including convergence and technology.

So, let's discuss everything that you have seen.

- What new information have you heard?

- What does all this statistics mean?

- Do you think these predictions about the future can come true?

Let's listen to predictions about the future of the planet of two young people. You should find out who is more optimistic: Martin or Bryony?

Talk about your answer in pairs before checking as a class.

Pre-teach:

Let's pass to the exercise 6 on page 45 (SB)

This exercise is based on that conversation between Martin and Bryony that you have already heard. So, you are to complete Martin and Bryony's predictions using the correct form of the verbs in the box. You have a few minutes and then we'll check.

4) Развитие диалогической речи

All right. Now let's read the Speaking tip! on page 45.

Speaking tip:

Use these expressions to say that you agree or disagree with a statement:

I think that's true. / I don't think that's true.

I agree / I don't agree with (you/him/that opinion).

I believe/don't believe that's right.

So, I'd like you to say whether you agree or disagree with the predictions in exercise 6. Give your reasons. Work with a partner, please. You have 3 minutes.

And now let's complete the predictions about the future in exercise 8 on page 45 (SB)

With your own ideas. Who can start? If computers become more intelligent than humans,… What can happen? Does everybody agree?

And the last task for today. Look at the 1^st picture on copies that you've got and tell me: Which of the things in the pictures do you think you will/won't/might have done by 2015?

And look at the 2^nd picture and tell me: Which of the things in the pictures do you think will/won't/might have happened by 2015?
