T: Yes, you are right.

Now you are to discuss the following questions in pairs:

- How worried are you about the future of our planet?

- What practical everyday things do you do to help the environment?

- How green do you consider yourself to be? - Very, quite, not very, not at all?

2) Проверка выполнения домашнего задания

Before we pass to the revision of grammatical theme Compound nouns, we should check your home task. So, what was your home assignment for today? Remind me, please. (Ex2 (5.2) in SB on p.115; Ex 2,3 on p.41 (WB) and answer on question) Let's check it.

Exercise 2 (5.2) on page 115 (SB)

You were to complete the first conditional sentences with the correct form of the verb in brackets.

1) doesn't, will be

2) will go, doesn't rain

4) won't go, don't get

5) get, will move out

6) won't win, don't play

7) won't buy, loses

In exercise 2 on page 41 (WB) you were to use the pictures to write first conditional sentences.

3. If he gets married, they will have two children.

Key: 1-d 2-b 3-g 4-h 5-f 6-e 7-a 8-c

Your answers on the question: How do you see your future? discuss in pair, please.

3) Повторение грамматической темы Compound nouns

Now we are going to think of grammatical theme: compound nouns. Remind me what it is.

COMPOUND NOUNS

Formation

Words can be combined to form compound nouns. These are very common, and new combinations are invented almost daily. They normally have two parts. The second part identifies the object or person in question (man, friend, tank, table, room). The first part tells us what kind of object or person it is, or what its purpose is (police, boy, water, dining, bed):

What type / what purpose What or who

police man

boy friend

water tank

dining table

bed room

The two parts may be written in a number of ways:

1. as one word.

Example: policeman, boyfriend

2. as two words joined with a hyphen.

Example: dining-table

3. as two separate words.

Example: fish tank.

But anyway you need to check in a dictionary whether a compound noun is written as one word or two words.

There are no clear rules about this - so write the common compounds that you know well as one word, and the others as two words. The two parts may be:

noun + noun

bedroom

motorcycle

noun + verb

rainfall

haircut

noun + adverb

hanger-on

passer-by

verb + noun

washing machine

swimming pool

verb + adverb*

lookout

take-off

adjective + noun

greenhouse

redhead

adjective + verb

dry-cleaning

public speaking

adverb + noun

onlooker

bystander

adverb + verb*

output

overthrow

upturn

input

Compound nouns often have a meaning that is different from the two separate words.

Stress is important in pronunciation, as it distinguishes between a compound noun (e.g. greenhouse) and an adjective with a noun (e.g. green house).

In compound nouns, the stress usually falls on the first syllable:

a 'greenhouse = place where we grow plants (compound noun)

a green 'house = house painted green (adjective and noun)

a 'bluebird = type of bird (compound noun)

a blue 'bird = any bird with blue feathers (adjective and noun)

All right! Let's practice. Open your SB on page 133. I'd like you to do exercises 1, 2 and 3.

So, exercise 1. You are to find compound nouns in the text on page 46.

Key: TV shows, general elections, political parties, local councilors, animal rights, green energy, wind farms, solar power, renewable energy, climate change.

In exercise 2 you should match 1-10 with a-j make compound nouns used to talk about the environment.

Key:

1. i

2. h

3. f

4. j

5. a

6. c

7. b

8. e

9. d

10. g

And in exercise 3 you are to complete the sentences with compound nouns from exercise 2.

Key:

1. acid rain

2. greenhouse effect

3. global warming

4. rainforest

Well done!

5. ozone layer

6. carbon emissions

7. endangered species

8. solar power

4) Работа с текстом с целью повторения лексического материала

Let's look at the posters on page 46 in your SB. What is the name of political party? What issues do you think this party campaigns for? You should make a list of your ideas in pairs.

All right! Now I'd like you to read the text “Going Green” in two minutes to find out if any of the ideas in your lists are mentioned.

We continue working with the text. So read through the questions in exercise 3 on page 46 (SB), underline the key words in the sentences and the relevant parts of the text. Do you know what in favour of means? (agree with)
