Summary

The graduation work is devoted to the modern English terminology of art taken from museum booklets of the USA and Great Britain.

The objective of this work is to make etymological, structural and thematic analyzes of modern English terminology of art in order to reveal general peculiarities of the functioning of terms, and their implementation in the texts of booklets.

The solution of the objective claims for doing away with a number of certain tasks, such as:

- considering the notion of “term” and looking through the development of this notion in the researches of Russian scholars;

- considering the museum booklet as a special type of tourist discourse;

- studying original texts of museum booklets in order to distinguish terminological units;

- making etymological, structural and thematic analyzes of the English terminology;

- reveal general peculiarities of the functioning of terms.

In the recent research 45 authentic museum booklets of the USA and Great Britain were under analyses and 100 terms were taken. This graduation work includes 27 out of 200 given contexts where the terms of art are used.

Theoretical significance of the research is to identify and analyze the types of terminological art units found in museum booklets. The frequency of use of terminological units of art revealed during the research can contribute to a deeper study of the borrowing of terms and features of cultural-specific vocabulary within the framework of tourist discourse.

Practical significance of the research is in the application of its results in practice by those who are interested in composing the texts of museum booklets. The results of the research can be taken into consideration by students and instructors of English and English lexicology, сulturology and Art history.

The structure of the graduation work includes the introduction, two chapters, the conclusion, references and the attachment.

The first chapter is theoretical and devoted to the history, becoming and developing of term and terminology. The theoretical background of the project includes fundamental works by prominent Russian scholars D.S. Lotte, V.M. Leichik, V.P. Danilenko, L.A. Manerko, V.A. Tatarinov and others. The appearance of new study such as terminology became one of the main branches in linguistics which was supported by the development of new information technologies, and industrialization and globalization. Though there is no common opinion of what to treat as term, we understand it as a lexical unit (a word or a phrase), denoting a concept related to a special subject area. The term is characterized by stylistic neutrality and monosemantic. Also through this chapter peculiarities of the terms of art can be seen. There are two more terms that were taken under consideration - booklet and discourse. The booklet is considered as a printed text, including features of different styles (publicistic, advertising, artistic and popular), capable of performing the function of a message (information booklet) or an influence function (advertising booklet). Under discourse, coherent speech is considered in conjunction with social, cultural, psychological and other factors involved in the interaction of people and their cognitive processes.

In conclusion to this chapter we can see that the content of the museum booklet is wider than other texts related to tourist discourse (for example, guidebooks). This is explained by the fact that the tourist discourse originates from the linguistic and geographical studies and linguodidactics, i.e. draws attention to the characteristic features of a particular state or ethnic group, while the booklet containing the terms of art characterizes the subject and phenomena of art in general, which are not are always attached to a certain country or people.

The second chapter is practical one and shows the results and statistics of etymological, structural and thematic analyzes of the English art terminology with contexts, given from the museum booklets. The results reveal that there are more borrowings in the English language (88 %) especially from Latin, French and Greek and there are only 12% of original English words.

Analysis of the terminological selection according to art terms in modern English has shown that more terms are root (single word) (63%), and the most productive syntactic way of term formation is the formation of two-component terminological combinations in the model N + prep + N and Adj + N (5%). The most productive term are nouns (82%), but verbs and adjectives also actively act as a sphere of functioning (8% and 7% respectively).

Thematic structuring allows to draw a conclusion that almost half (45%) of terms of art belong to the universal category of terms, which is used with several or all kinds of art. The remaining terminology is divided between spatial (42%), temporary (9%) and synthetic (4%) arts.

Identification of the highest productivity (frequency of use) was conducted among the 10 most used terms of art. The analysis has shown that universal terms have the highest productivity. In conclusion, it should be added that in addition to word-building and borrowing terms from other special spheres, the emergence of special techniques and genres in the art of other countries and peoples was also reflected in the English language by borrowing these terms (e.g. "jazz" from the Jamaican Creole language).

The study shows that the terminological art units used in museum booklets, on the one hand, form part of the terminology of art, and on the other hand, form their own special terminology, which can be seen through the differences in the content of British and American museum booklets. With further research and study of the terminology of art, both original and translated English booklets can be used, as well as booklets in other languages that are official in certain states. Such an expansion of the language base will allow to compare the introduction and usage of certain terminological units in museum booklets in each of the languages on the territory of different states.
