Lexical Game "Biggies!" Write the sentences on the blackboard.
1) David ran all the way to the stop, but he missed the biggie.
2) A biggie way to get to different places in the city is to use an Underground train. Students should guess from the context what "biggie" means in each case (bus, quick). Then ask students to work in pairs, and to make up two of their own "biggies!" Point out that "biggie" can be a noun, verb, adjective, etc., and explain that it must be possible to guess the meaning. They have to make "biggie", using the topic "City transport".
Now divide the class into two teams, A and B, and proceed as follows: Team A reads out one of their "biggies".
Team В has three chances to guess the exact word. If they guess the word, Team В scores one point.
Tt they fail to guess the word and the context is clear, Team A scores one point. But if the context is not clear, Team A loses a point.

(Н02):
A quick and easy way to get to different places in the city is to use an underground train. The trains run all day and most of the night. It's better to buy a ticket before you get on the train and not to make journey between eight o'clock and ten o'clock in the morning, or four o'clock and six o'clock in the evening. These are called the "rush" hours.
Thousands of people are going to work or coming home again then, and it is difficult to move or to find a place to sit on the train.
There are some special visitors' buses. They take visitors from different countries and cities to many of the interesting places in the city on one journey. It takes about one and a half hours. But visitors can break their journey and get off (and on again) at the different places they want to visit.
London taxis are called «black cabs». Most of them are black, but some are not.
Everyone can stop a taxi if it has a "For Hire" sign on it. The drivers are usually friendly and helpful.
Visitors can take a boat trip along the river Thames. Boats leave Westminster Pier and Charing Cross Pier, and they go to Tower Pier and Greenwich.
Between April and October, visitors can take a longer boat trip to Hampton Court (about four hours) -- a beautiful palace in a big park.

This is a place where information in print (books, manuscripts, periodicals and musical scores) and in other forms is collected and arranged to serve people of all ages and interests.
Libraries appeared in ancient times in Egypt, Assyria, Green and Rome. Perhaps the most famous library of that early age was at Alexandria. It was found by Ptolomy 1.
By the middle of the first century В. C. there were 700,000 papyrus rolls in the library.
The library today is a centre for all kinds of communications: printed, pictured, recorded, and even electronically stored. People go to the library to read, look, listen, search, relax, discuss, learn, and think.
Libraries can be found in many places. There are libraries in small towns and large cities, and there are libraries in schools, universities, colleges.
The largest and the best known libraries in the world are: the British National Library in London, the Library of Congress in Washington and Russian State Library.
The national libraries of different countries keep in touch and exchange books and information.
Central scientific Library is the largest one in Ukraine.
It was founded in 1919 as the Ukrainian National Library. By 1940, its Collection numbered about 5,000,000 books.
Today the Central scientific Library in Kyiv has got 10,000,000 books, and contains the richest collection of old Ukrainian books.

1) Pre-Reading Activities. Етап підготовки до читання тексту. Problem solving.
Т: Do you agree with the following statements? To write a good, interesting letter is a real art. It is very important to write correctly and neatly.
Read some advices to make sure about the right way of writing your informal letter. The Art of Letter-Writing.
(H04): The art of letter-writing
Everyone likes to receive letters from relatives, friends and people we love. But not all of us like to write letters. Perhaps you have heard people say: "I don't know what to write in letters", or "I hate writing letters".
To write a good, interesting letter is a real art. Here are some rules you should follow if you want to write an interesting letter to your friend.
1. Make the content of your letter interesting.
Make sure that the news which you are eager to share with your friend will be of interest to your friend. Have his/her last letter in front of you so that you can answer all of his/her questions.
2. Have an interesting beginning.
The spirit of your letter is in the first paragraph. Show how glad you were to receive his/her letter or describe the most interesting thing that has happened to you.
3. Think of a good ending.
The final impression is as important as the first one. That's why much significance should be attached to the last words. Never write sentences like this: "Since I have no other news to write, I had better close". This shows that writing this letter is a case of duty not interest, to you. You may close by wishing your friend success in something that you know is of importance to him/her.
4. Think of an interesting style.
Write to your friend in a way as if you were talking to him/her. But the degree of informality depends upon the person to whom you are writing. Show your personality and good humor in every letter that you write to your friend.
5. Write clearly, correctly and neatly.
Keep in mind, that if a letter is written in a sloppy way, your friend will read it with less understanding and interest.
2) While-Reading Activities. Етап читання тексту та виконання вправ під час читання.
а) Переглядове читання тексту з метою отримання загального уявлення про його зміст (skimming).

II. ОСНОВНА ЧАСТИНА УРОКУ
Reading 1. Пред'явлення тексту для читання "National Traditions, Habits and Customs of Great Britain" (HO1).
1) Pre-Reading Activities. Етап підготовки до читання тексту. Problem solving.
Т: Do you know that in Britain:
- strangers usually don't talk to each other on trains?
- it is polite to queue for everything: buses, theatre, tickets, in shops, etc?
- people say "thank you" when they give money to a shop assistant?
- people don't take their shoes off when they enter a house?
- people wash in their own bath water?
These are national habits. A habit is something we do very often, sometimes these habits become customs. Our habits and customs can appear very strange to other people and it is usually foreigners who notice them.
What about your country? Do you talk to strangers in your country? Do you automatically queue? Or not?
2) While-Reading Activities. Етап читання тексту та виконання вправ під час читання.
а) Переглядове читання тексту з метою отримання загального уявлення про його зміст (skimming).
Т: Look through the text and say if you find any British habits strange and unusual.
(HO2): National Traditions, Habits and Customs of Great Britain
Every nation and every country has its own customs and traditions. In Britain traditions play a more important part in the life of the people than in other countries. Englishmen are proud of their traditions and carefully keep them up. Foreigners coming to England are struck at once by quite a number of customs and peculiarities in English life.
Some ceremonies are rather formal, such as the Changing the guard at Buckingham Palace. Sometimes you will see of group of cavalrymen riding on horses, backs through the streets of London. They wear red uniforms, shining helmets, long black boots and long white gloves. These men are Life Guards. Their-special duty is to guard the king or the queen of Great Britain and very important quests of the country.
To this day an English family prefers a house with a fireplace and a garden to a flat in a modern house with central heating. Most English love gardens.
Sometimes the garden in front of the house is a little square covered with cement painted green in imitation of grass and a box of flowers. They love flowers very much.
The English people like animals very much, too. Pet dogs, cats, ducks, chickens, canaries and other friends of man have a much better life in Britain than anywhere else. In Britain they have special dog shops selling food, clothes and other things for dogs.
Foreigners often laugh at English people.
They say "In England you get chips with everything!" But even the British don't eat chips with their breakfast.
However, the traditional English breakfast is a big meal. Visitors to Britain often think that breakfast is the best meal of the day.
A traditional English breakfast consists of bacon and sausage with eggs and tomatoes, milk, cornflakes, toast, tea, marmalade and butter. It is so big that you can easily go without lunch. However, there is a lot of fat in this kind of breakfast and today many people eat a healthier one.
Holidays are especially rich in old traditions and are different is Scotland, Ireland Wales and England. Christmas is a great English national holiday and in Scotland it is not observed at all. But six days later, on New Year's Eve the Scotts begin to enjoy themselves. All the shops and factories are closed on New Year's Day. People invite friends to their houses. Greetings and presents are offered.
A new tradition has been born in Britain. Every year a large number of ancient motor-cars drive from London to Brighton. Some of these veteran cars look very funny. This run from London to Brighton is a colourful demonstration. People are dressed in the clothes of those times.
It is not a race, and most of the cars come to Brighton, which is sixty miles from London, only in the evening.
6) Scanning. Читання тексту з метою максимально повного та точного розуміння всієї інформації, що міститься в тексті та критичного її осмислення. Say if the sentences are true or false.

Aim 1. Повідомлення теми та мети уроку.
Т: The topic of our today's lesson is "O'Henry, a great American writer". By the end of the lesson you should be able:
* to listen and understand the gist and details of the text despite the natural difficulties;
* to identify details from the text for reading;
* to discuss Task 7 of your Home Reading.
Warm-up 2. Уведення в іншомовну атмосферу.
1) Discussion. Робота з висловлюваннями про книгу.
Т: Read the statements about books by Oscar Wilde and discuss the given topic.
(HO ): Statements about Books
Books, I believe, may be devided into three groups: books to read; books to re-read; books not read at all.
The third class is the most important. To tell people what to read is, as a rule, either useless or harmful. But to tell people what riot to read is a very different matter.
It is indeed necessary in this age of ours, an age that reads so much that it has no time to admire, and that writes so much that it has no time to think. Whoever will select "The Worst Hundred Books" and publish a list of them will do the rising generation a real and lasting service.
(After O. Wilde)
a) Conversation.
T: Do you agree that there are three groups of books: books you must read; books you must re-read; books you must not read at all?
Which is the largest and the smallest group? Why?
How do you choose a book to read?
What books do you re-read?
How do you know what books not to read at all?
Do you agree that a list of the "Worst Hundred Books" may be useful?
б) Here are some messages from a book review: "It is not a book to throw aside lightly, it is a book to throw away with great force". Haveyou ever read such books? What are they?
в) Make your own list of ten best books to read and speak about your choice. With your partner. Compare your lists.

(H03): O'Henry
O'Henry, a great American writer, is famous for his short stories. His real name was William Sidney Porter.
He was born in the South-Eastern part of the USA in a doctor's family in 1862. At the age of 15 he began to work. He worked for 11 years as a salesman, a reporter and an editor of a magazine.
Then he worked in a bank. Some time later he was accused of stealing money from the bank. But that was not true. Yet he was put into prison for three and half years. He began to write his short stories and prison. O'Henry is famous for his short stories with a happy end. His style is full of humor and belief in life.
Most of his stories are about life in big cities, farms and small towns of America. His favourite hero is always the ordinary little man of America whom he always defended in his stories.
O'Henry is also famous for his plays and sketches. His sketches have as a rule a most unusual ending. They are both sad and funny, like the one about a young unemployed husband who sells his watch to buy his wife a beautiful comb for her lovely hair. The wife, wishing to make her husband a present, having no money, sells her beautiful long hair to buy him a chain for his watch.
Have you read this sketch by O'Henry? It's worth reading, isn't it?
